NaNoWriMo?

Every year I sign up, and every year I wander off to do other things after a while, leaving my potential novels unwritten and thus dead.

Last year I came close to finishing the 50,000 word goal for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) by writing a fictionalized memoir, only I got fed up with it after the not-so-fictionalized early drafts. My life is certainly packed full of novel-worthy stories, but I had too much trouble isolating story arcs to give my book a plot and structure.

This year I am writing a mystery novel, the first in a series, about a depressed but helpful citizen and a stubborn detective. The series will involve all sorts of seeming suicides that may be murders, and a stealthy ‘serial killer’ who may be providing ‘victims’ with the skills, information and means to commit suicide. Not all the cases will turn out to involve this suicide advisor, but it won’t be clear which cases involve this character, nor will it be clear whether any one person is the ‘killer’. Dark? Yes. But, since I dislike gratuitous violence and gore, there will be very few, if any, truly graphic scenes.

Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? What are you writing?
